The Fall Pieces I Can’t Wait to Wear Again

Cream high-waisted tapered trousers, a fall investment piece

It’s still far too hot for sleeves. And yet, every morning in front of my closet, I find my hand drifting past the linen and toward the bottom shelf — the layering shelf. Fall is coming, and I already know what I’m going to reach for.

My fall wardrobe has a fraction of the turnover of my summer one. The styles are more classic, I tend to invest a bit more, and my clothes last longer. That’s not a complaint about summer — summer clothes are joyful, they just don’t survive as many seasons. Fall pieces do. Which is why this is the moment I take my time and choose.

Today I want to share the nine pieces I re-wear season after season. No new trends, no impulse buys — just the things that have already proven themselves to me. And since I’m a consultant, I’ll be honest about the math: if a piece earns its place in your rotation, its cost-per-wear drops with every single season you keep it.

The Confidence Formula

Fit + Fabric + Re-wear = An investment, not an impulse. Before you add anything to your fall list, ask whether it will still be in rotation next year. If yes, it’s an investment. If you’re not sure, wait for it to go back on the shelf.

The Nine Pieces I Re-Wear Every Fall

1. A long-sleeve tee, sized up

The J.Crew boyfriend tee is the one I can’t stop talking about. I sized up on purpose — I want the shoulder to drop a little, and I plan to wear mine with a wrap skirt. It’s the piece that makes a plain day feel put-together without any effort at all.

2. Block heel wedges in a happy color

Shoes are where I splurge most these days, and my Alaia block heel wedges are first in line for the first cool morning. The red is very happy. They are wildly comfortable, and I keep reaching for them — which is exactly what you want from a shoe you’re investing in.

3. The easy boat shoe

My Miu Miu boat shoes are my forever love. The perfect easy shoe — a touch of prep, none of the fuss. They go with jeans, with a wrap skirt, with almost everything I own.

4. A button-down you’ll actually keep

I have one button-down that has outlasted every other shirt I’ve bought in years. It’s one of my most favorite button-downs — not because of the brand, but because of the way it drapes and the way it still looks new after every wash. Buy one and stop shopping for a replacement.

5. Barrel jeans, worth the splurge

My Nili Lotan Shon jeans. I’ve had the cream pair for a while, and I recently added the vintage tan wash. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Every single time. Barrel leg sits at the waist where your jeans should sit, and the wash photographs and wears beautifully.

6. Silky pants in more than one color

My favorite silky pants. I have too many colors — I’m not sorry. They are so comfortable and they have a drape that makes even the simplest top look intentional. This is a piece I reach for in a good week at least half the time.

7. Suede mules

These are so comfy and cute. I own a jacquard version of the tote-style silhouette, but the suede mules have won me over for fall. They pair with the barrel jeans, with the silky pants, with the long-sleeve tee. One shoe, three of the pieces on this list.

8. A fisherman sweater

A classic, and I mean that literally. The fisherman sweater is the kind of piece that doesn’t need to be explained — it works over the tee, under a blazer, with the jeans. I keep mine in a neutral so it goes with everything else on this list.

9. Woven flats

I have too many pairs of these, and I’m not embarrassed to say it. So comfortable and so chic. For the days when the mules are too warm and the wedges are too much, the woven flat is the answer.

How I Decide What Stays

Here’s what I tell my clients when they ask me what to buy for fall. Don’t buy the trend. Buy the piece you can see yourself in three seasons from now. The test is simple: can you build three outfits with it, using things you already own? If the answer is yes, it belongs in your wardrobe. If it’s no, it’s a nice thing — but it’s not a piece you’ll re-wear.

The truth is, you already have what you need. Most of us don’t need a new fall wardrobe. We need to know which of the pieces we own are worth coming back to, and which one or two additions would actually complete the rotation. That’s a much smaller, much calmer list — and it’s the one I’ve built for myself.

Isabelle’s Edit

If you only take one thing from this list: size up on the basics. The boyfriend tee, the button-down, the sweater — buy them with room to layer, and they’ll work harder for you than the size that fits perfectly today. Style isn’t about becoming someone else. It’s about building a wardrobe that knows who you are, season after season.

a note from Isabelle

When the first cool morning arrives, you’ll know exactly where to look. And that’s the whole point.
